This week, Auto Express announced that the second-generation MG ZS will be unveiled by the end of August, but it will not include an electric version. Instead, an all-new, all-electric compact SUV, based on the award-winning MG4 hatchback, is set to succeed the electric MG ZS EV. We now have our first look at this upcoming model.
Although the new electric SUV isn’t expected to debut until early next year, images and technical details have been released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
The new SUV shares a clear family resemblance with the MG4 and the MG Cyberster electric convertible. However, it features a less aggressive front end and slimmer headlights compared to these models. The SUV also includes black plastic wheel arches, side cladding, and roof rails for a more rugged appearance.
The SUV will carry the familiar large chrome MG badge on the front and a sizable air intake in the bumper to aid in cooling the motors and batteries. The rear design mirrors the MG4 with a full-width light bar and Y-shaped tail lights.
According to the MIIT filing, the new electric SUV measures 4,476mm in length and has a wheelbase of 2,730mm, which is 162mm and 149mm longer than the outgoing ZS EV, respectively. It is also wider and lower than the ZS EV, with dimensions of 1,849mm in width and 1,621mm in height.
The official name of the SUV has not been disclosed; MG’s UK product boss, David Allison, confirmed it will not be called the ZS EV but has not revealed the new name.
The SUV will use the same Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) as the MG4, which means it will likely offer similar battery and motor options. The range-topping version is expected to exceed 300 miles on a single charge, with the possibility of all-wheel drive variants as well.
